Believe it or not, the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, is the last regular season event of 2013.
This is the one that will determine who will get to keep their cards (top 125 in FedExCup points) and who will get into the first playoff event next week, The Barclays in New Jersey (also top 125 in FedExCup points).
Those who don’t make it and end up in the category of 126 to 200 will be eligible for the Web.com four-tournament playoff that will determine which 25 players will earn PGA Tour cards for the 2013-2014 season. They will be joining the top 25 on the 2013 Web.com money list who automatically earn their cards.
Name players currently in the 126 to 200 category include: Bud Cauley, Chad Campbell, Ricky Barnes, Trevor Immelman, Sean O’Hair, Robert Karlsson and Ryo Ishikawa. That’s the bad news for them.
The good news for them is that the points are very bunched around the 125 spot (361 points) and a good finish this week can propel them to safety. Finishing 10th earns 75 points; 20th, 51 points; 30th, 41 points; 40th, 31 points; just to give you an idea.
The four Web.com playoff tournaments are:
- Hotel Fitness Championship — Fort Wayne, Indiana
- Chiquita Classic — Davidson, North Carolina
- Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship — Columbus, Ohio
- Web.com Tour Championship — Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
At the other end of the spectrum, all of the PGA Tour players who have had better years are trying to get into the next tier for the subsequent PGA Tour playoff tournaments:
- Barclays in New Jersey on New York Harbor, Top 125 in FedExCup points
- Deutsche Bank in Boston, Top 100
- Idle week
- BMW Championship, Top 70
- Tour Championship, Top 30
And then there’s another idle week leading into the Presidents Cup, October 4 – 6.
So at first blush, it may appear to be Greensboro week. But there’s a lot more riding it.
