WGC-Cadillac Match Play: First round notes

Trolling through the player transcripts for the Cadillac Match Play at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, there weren’t a lot of real mastery tidbits in the players’ comments. The lion’s share was about hole-by-hole turning points, what length putt to give or not and how important a first-round win was.

Since they are playing in a round robin within their group, it has suddenly dawned on them that they couldn’t really afford to lose that first match because if you then go 2 and 1, your initial opponent wins because of head-to-head match loses. So go 2 and 1 with a first round win and be done with it.

The thing I found most interesting was the number of big name players who lost Wednesday. There was kind of an undercurrent that they were going to now eventually lose anyway, so why make them shell out more travel costs when they could be heading back to the TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship.

Here’s the list of notables who lost in the first round:

  • Jason Dufner
  • Brandt Snedeker
  • Adam Scott
  • Ryan Moore
  • Jason Day
  • Henrik Stenson
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Justin Rose
  • Ryan Palmer
  • Jimmy Walker
  • Ian Poulter
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Graeme McDowell
  • J.B. Holmes
  • Russell Henley

So it will now be interesting to see if the second round presents salvation or a third round of the walking dead no more interesting than if they had been eliminated in the first round like in the old days.
